Opera switches to Webkit

Feb 20, 2013

Opera, an internet web browser with some estimated 300 million users moved to the popular open-source Webkit engine. Previously opera browsers used the Presto Web rendering engine. Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari browsers both use Webkit.

Web engines, like Webkit, take the online content such as HTML and using the formatting styles such as CSS and transform them into the web pages we see on the screen.

Opera's Cheif Technology Officer Håkon Wium Lie said on the change

"It makes more sense to have our experts working with the open-source communities to further improve WebKit and Chromium, rather than developing our own rendering engine further. Opera will contribute to the WebKit and Chromium projects, and we have already submitted our first set of patches: to improve multi-column layout."

Lie also explained

"The WebKit engine is already very good, and we aim to take part in making it even better. It supports the standards we care about, and it has the performance we need."

Hopefully this will make Opera even better. Only IE and Firefox to go now!
